Here's Your New Post Workout Skincare Routine

What’s your current skincare routine? Some of us are well into a counter filled with products, while others have a small but powerful selection. Most of us have a fixed time to go through our skincare routine, but have you ever considered fixing a routine for after a workout?

Whether you’re a sweat buckets kind of person after a workout, or just kind of turn red, taking care of your skin after a vigorous workout is vital to keep you fresh and clean. If you’d clean your equipment after a workout, cleaning up your face should be just as important!

Aside from the hygiene side of things, skin issues like post-workout acne is very much real, and it’s important to take steps to prevent that. In order, here are the three basic steps you should take for your skin after a workout!

1. Cleanse

If you’re thinking that cleanse = cleanser, well… yes and more! Washing your face (and maybe taking a shower) should be your first step. The longer the sweat stays on your face, the more time it has to clog up your pores!

Applying a gentle facial wash and following up with a cleanser is a great way to get rid of excess oil. However, stay away from exfoliants or deep scrubs. The face is more sensitive after a workout, and these might cause more harm than good.

2. Moisturise

We know that this sounds counterproductive to cleansing- why put moisture on your face when you were just trying to take it away? Cleansing does help remove excess sweat, but stripping it away completely might leave you with dry, flaky skin.

A good moisturiser helps keep your thirsty skin moisturised while also nourishing it with vitamins and antioxidants. This step is especially important if you usually turn red when you exercise; it helps bring down the extra heat!

3. Protect

This last step depends on what time you’re working out. If the sun is still up, even if you’re going to be indoors, applying a layer of sunscreen with SPF will help give your skin that added protection. Be generous with the body lotion for the rest of your body too!

If your workout is in the evening or later at night, a nice option if not for a night cream is to apply a face mask. Not only does it hydrate, but it’s also a good way to turn the workout-to-skincare session into a self-care routine. Do note to stick with refreshing masks and not exfoliating ones.
